Over the years Wragsters have always done charity fund raising, on Soldier Day 2011 they raised over £1150 for the John Eastwood Hospice in Mansfield with 3 coaches and a student doing 25 rounds each for a 100 round challenge, and have been around on the fight circuit and the fighters have done well by winning amateur and professional domestic kickboxing titles, but the last few years have been very successful. October 2011 head coach Lee Wragg won the W.U.M.A World Cup World Championships under Full contact kickboxing rules, Selston lad Arran Kendrick won the W.U.M.A World Cup World Championships under light continuous contact rules, whilst Selston’s Ebony Upton came 2nd place in Semi contact and light contact rules.
In 2012 Wragsters promoted their first kickboxing promotion at Alfreton leisure centre which was a huge success with a team of fighters making their debut in a boxing ring, Codnor Park’s Andy Wragg won a W.U.M.A PRO Super middle weight World Title by beating the World title holder Mark Smith.
But 2013 has been their best year by far, in April Head Coach Lee Wragg won the W.U.M.A Pro British Masters Super cruiser weight full contact Title, and 15year old Ebony Upton got a 1st place in light contact and a 2nd place in Korean patterns in the Welsh Open, and in the W.U.M.A Battle of England won 1st place in light contact and Korean Patterns, in June three of Wragsters Instructors/ coaches did 33 rounds each with the final round a free for all for a 100 round challenge which raised just under £3500 for the Amelia- Mae trust, Amelia- Mae was a two year old in stage 4 neuroblastoma and Wragsters wanted to raise £1000 towards the £250,000 she needed for life saving treatment, unfortunately not long after fragile Amelia -Mae passed away peacefully in her sleep, all the money raised went to the Amelia-Mae Foundation.
In August this year Head Coach Lee Wragg and Ebony Upton were picked to represent their country with the W.U.M.A GB Squad, They travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to compete against the world’s best in the World Martial Arts Games, Lee came away with a bronze medal (3rd) in the Boxing and a silver medal (2nd) in the full contact kickboxing, Ebony came away with
15
a silver medal in Korean patterns, a silver medal in over 16’s light contact kickboxing and GOLD medal in under 16’s light contact kickboxing. September saw Wragsters fighters Jordan Dixon get a draw in his first contest and Arran Kendrick demolished his opponent with a 46 second K.O in his 3rd Full contact bout.
October was the annual black belt grading with 8 students and 1 instructor taking either their junior black belt, 1st degree black belt and 3rd degree black belt, non of these will know if they’ve passed this until the Wragsters end of year presentation night at the Dale Club, Jacksdale on Saturday 23rd November, all welcome, tickets are £2.50 and it’s £5 on the door, there will be a kids fancy dress competition, hot buffet, presentations and some special awards, disco and live box office boxing. A charity raffle will take place in aid of Macmillan Nurses and we invite all local businesses to donate prizes to this cause, please get in touch on the numbers below.
Head Coach Lee was nominated and won the Amber Valley Sports Person of the year award and now has had his nomination put through to Derbyshire Sports awards.
Wragsters Kickboxing classes run all year round at their HQ at Ripley and every Thursday at Jacksdale’s Dale club, 6 - 7.30 pm. All welcome from 5 years upwards.
Wragsters Kickboxing Academy would like to thank all students, members and their families for their continued support.
