PIRDUE, Anthony

Private Anthony Pirdue
49923 South Staffordshire Regiment

Anthony was born in 1889 at Pontypridd, Wales son of Anthony Pirdue, a coal miner, below ground and his wife Sarah Ann (nee Perkins) from Brinsley, Notts. In 1901 the family was living at New Brinsley, Notts but by 1911 his parents had moved to No 6, William Cottages, Albert Avenue, Jacksdale. Anthony had brothers and sisters James, John, Joseph William, Sarah and Mary Hannah. His brother John also served during WW1 and was killed in action on 1st July 1916.

Anthony’s service records do not seem to have survived but his Medal Rolls Index Card indicates he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.

Anthony was a well known local character as he worked as a waiter at the Portland Arms Hotel in Jacksdale.
