John Charles Minett was born in 1892 at Bagthorpe the son of John Minett, a coal miner born Madeley, Shropshire and his wife Fanny (nee Wardle), born Westwood, Notts. In 1901 the family was living at Victoria Street, Skegby. John had brothers and sisters James, Dorothy, William and Minnie. In 1906 John’s mother died and his father re-married in 1909 to Mary Jane Vernon. By 1911 John was no longer living with his father but was instead living at Wansley Hall, Bagthorpe with his maternal grandparents Charles and Dorothy Wardle.

John enlisted on 12th September 1914, entering the Egyptian Theatre of War on 26th April 1915 for which he was awarded the 1914-15 Star. He was discharged from the Army on 26th July 1917 as he had been wounded and was awarded Silver War Badge No 124128. He was also a recipient of the Victory and British War Medals. His full service records have not survived. His brother James also served, home address at Skegby.

In 1917 John married Kate Rimmer, born Rushcliffe, Notts in the Basford Registration District and they had children Edith, Dorothy, Charles, Eric and Joyce.
