William Henry Machin was born in 1895 at Westwood, Notts the son of William Machin, a chemical worker from Somercotes and Ann Jane (nee Rickers) from Madeley, Shropshire. In 1911 the family was living at Franklin Road, Jacksdale and William aged 16 was a coal miner ganger. In 1911 his parents had been married for 16 years and had 5 children of whom 2 had survived, William and his sister Elsie Eliza. Elsie went on to marry Herbert Wood on 2nd August 1920.

William’s military details have not been confirmed but it is possible he was either 34344 Driver Royal Engineers, who served in France and was awarded a Silver War Badge (due to being wounded) or T3/027085 Driver Army Service Corps who served in Egypt or possibly S4/161530 Driver Army Service Corps.

In 1920 William married Florence nee Davis in the Belper, Derbyshire District and they had children Iris, Jack and Cyril. Iris married William Wood in 1941, at which time, the family home was at 3, Wagstaff Lane, Jacksdale.
