Born 1874 at Ironville, son of William Beaman, an iron worker and his wife Annie who, in 1881 were living at 24, King William Street, Ironville. Annie was widowed and later married a Gregory.
John Henry Beaman is listed on the ‘Absent Voters List 1918/19’ as living at Palmerston Street, Westwood.
In July 1916 at St. Mary’s Church, Westwood he married Annie Elizabeth Key or Keys (nee Maltby), a widow, aged 43, daughter of George Maltby, a miner. At the time of the marriage John, a bachelor is aged 41 and his occupation is given as a soldier. Annie had been widowed on two occasions having been previously married to Arthur Knight in 1890 who died in 1901 and later to Joseph Keys in 1902, who died in 1908.
A relative has informed us that John, known as Jack, served as batman to Major Barber-Walker. His Medal Rolls Index Card reveals that he was awarded the the 1914-15 Star, serving in the Balkans from 30th September 1915, as well as the Victory and British War Medals.
