Percy was born about 1882 at Bulwell, Nottingham, son of Henry Dawes, a colliery labourer and Mary Ann Dawes (nee Kirk). Henry has siblings Clara Kirk, Samuel, George Henry, Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Isaiah, Alfred Arthur, John William, and Maud Mary. In 1911 Percy was living with his wife Annie (nee Lingard) whom he had married in 1906 and children: Doris born late 1910, Frederick Percy b. 1914 and Cyril b. 1916. Percy’s occupation is given as house painter and decorator.

We have no details of Percy’s military career except to say he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.

His son Percy served in WW2 as a Sherwood Forester and died at El Alamein on 24th October 1942, aged 28.

Percy died in 1980 in Nottingham, having reached the grand old age of 99.
