Jacksdale War Memorial is unusual as it not only lists those who gave their lives in World War One and Two but also lists those from Jacksdale and Westwood who served during World War One. Here you can read about the men named on our war memorial and also about the monument itself, which has a remarkable history of its own.
Since the original unveiling in 1921, villagers and the British Legion have gathered together here on Remembrance Sunday.
On 11th November, 2016 Richard Robinson of JACHs, met with Notts TV’s Owen Shipton and Jason Mordan who is Nottinghamshire County Council’s Senior Practitioner in Historic Buildings. The meeting took place at, and concerned the village(s) War Memorial which, thanks to the efforts of Jason and his colleagues at County Hall, has been afforded Grade II Listed Status by Historic England.
The Memorial (our ‘Soldier Jack’) was first listed on 16th May, 2016 and was:
“listed as Grade II for the following principal reasons:
- Historic Interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
- Design: as a substantial and well-executed memorial with original and replica sculptural work of high quality.
Jacksdale War Memorial is now listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest”.
Listed status provides the memorial with added protections in the future, including from developments that may impact upon it and its setting. No change may be made to the memorial without the specific approval of the appropriate council department.
