Bertram Burnham was the son of Bertram and Emma Burnham of Top Row, Pye Hill, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. Bert had three sisters, Ellen, Doreen and Ann, and a brother named Joe.
He was obviously an adept scholar, starting his education at Jacksdale Council Schools and then moving on to Heanor Technical College and later, The People’s College, Nottingham. As a fully qualified electrician, Bert took up employment, working underground at Selston Colliery.
Bert joined the Navy in 1940, serving on the HMS Yacht Tuscarora, a merchant vessel, hired by the Admiralty as an anti-submarine yacht for use between 1940 and 1945. On Monday 24th June 1940, Bert died at sea, due to an accident.
He is commemorated at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire, England.
