This Sherwood Forester is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, in a grave marked by a Commonwealth War Graves headstone. We know he died at home on 18th January 1918, age unknown, probably being sent home from active service, due to ill health or injury. Although he is buried at St Mary’s - he is not mentioned on the Jacksdale War Memorial at all, either as having fallen or as having served and we have not yet determined why.

From the ‘ Soldiers Died in the Great War’ CD we have established that he was born in Sheffield and enlisted at Newark. The Soldiers Died CD also indicates that he served with the 2/8th Btn Sherwood Foresters, but the Commonwealth War Graves commission gives his battalion as the 5th Sherwood Foresters.  A place of residence is not recorded, but due to his final resting place was likely to be Jacksdale or the surrounding area.

Buried St Mary’s Churchyard, Westwood, Notts.  Date of death - Friday 18th Jan 1918
