WESTWOOD PEACE CELEBRATION COMMITTEE

Submissions welcome !

Very little is known about the above group of gentleman from Westwood. The photograph was undoubtedly taken just after the end of World War One and it is likely than many of the men photographed actually served during the war, and had tasted the horrors of war first hand.  It was to be the 'war to end all wars' and feelings of pacifism were running high. Matthew Holland of Selston was an active pacifist and a leader of the peace movement in Selston. Mr Holland had many strong disagreements with the Reverend Charles Harrison, who had helped recruit soldiers into the war from the grounds of St Helen's Church at Selston.  Mr Holland an active non-conformist, argued that war went against the teachings of Christ. If anyone can tell us more about the Westwood Peace Celebration Committee we would be very pleased to include this on the site.
