CERAMIC MAP FOR JACKSDALE & WESTWOOD

Unveiled 24th September 2003

The new ceramic map for Jacksdale was unveiled on Wednesday 24th September 2003 by Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Edward Holmes.

The map, comprises two main parts. Firstly a border of fired clay scenes depicting the old industries of the village, wildlife and local shops and buildings.  The clay scenes were created by local residents and children who attended several workshops held over a series of months.

Right: Jacksdale youth club members helping to construct the central part of the map which is an aerial view of Jacksdale & Westwood, made up of many small ceramic tiles.  Each tiny tile was cut, shaped and then glued on to the street map.

This project was co-ordinated by Georgina Streets of Ashfield District Council working in close partnership with B.A.D.J.E.R.  The map was designed and overall construction supervised by Peter Massey of Zantium.

Many local groups helped at the various workshops - Jacksdale Primary School, The Christian Centre's 'Safe' and 'Just Chillin' Youth Groups, as well as the Friday afternoon senior residents club

Right: Georgina Streets A.D.C. (in the white blouse), Peter Massey of Zantium( leaning over for a closer look) and at the far side of the table, Jane Harpham and Brian Pitts - Jacksdale Youth Club Leaders (having an Art Attack!!).  Helped by Nicky Cockayne (with more glue at the ready!).

But all the hard work was worth it and the finished result is very impressive.

At last the day for the unveiling arrived and  Peter Massey runs through details of the production procedure with Edward Holmes.
Local residents move in to take a closer look at the map which has been sited on the rear wall of the Jacksdale Community Centre.

B.A.D.J.E.R. would like to thank everyone who was involved in creating the Mosaic Map for Jacksdale & Westwood.
